About Me:
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

I always have trouble writing these things, but let's see what can be done.…..
I am an unimportant teacher of an obscure martial art that most people have never heard of called Pencak Silat (pronounce it Penchak Seelat).
I have taught martial arts for over twenty five years and practiced them for over forty years. When it comes to waking up, Movement has always been the method that works best for me, and the martial arts are where I find “flow”.
I have spent much of a very long life traveling the world in search of teachers who could further my education in the arts. I have trained in martial and related movement arts in South-East Asia, Central Asia, Iran, India, Africa, Central and South America, and I am happy to say I am still learning. (and traveling)
I am told by my peers that I am pretty good at what I do, and that I may have a few useful thoughts rolling around in my head.
I also teach English, graphic arts, yoga, and wilderness survival skills, with a specialization in desert survival, semi-regularly.
I love Africa, and live there off and on. I returned from an extended stay (about a year) in East Africa just over two years ago.
I went there to teach college and study indigenous African martial arts. I managed to pick up moderate skills in Maasai stick fighting and Cape Flats style knife fighting. I plan on going back to South Africa soon to further my education in Cape knife.
I have spent a good part of my life traveling around our lovely little planet, and have found it to be an truly fascinating place.
I write a blog that has many fives of loyal fans, it can be found at

Right now I am devoting my time to translating the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali into English (yet again, there are perhaps twenty or more translations already, but I have never been happy with any of them).
When I am not translating, I am teaching, both at home , or doing the occasional seminar, and dragging my students around to whatever competitions seem interesting.
All this martial stuff probably doesn't seem very “spiritual”, but in my experience it is. I find it a good way to unite “head, heart and hand” as it were.
